It was written by American Roman Catholic teacher, Virginia (Ginny) Vissing - who was listed as Rosalie Vissing in early publications. It was first published in 1974, when copyright was assigned to the Shalom Community of Whicita. Subsequent registrations were to the Sisters of St Mary of Namur - presumably because Vissing joined this religious community.
The song was recorded on an album from "Come, Lord" released in 1976 by People of Praise Music Ministry - a charismatic covenant community, based in South Bend, Indiana USA.
Hymn-books where it has been published in include:
- 20th Century Folk Hymnal, Volume 2
- Hymns Old and New - A Hymnbook for the Irish Church
- Agape: songs of hope and reconciliation, Oxford University Press, New York, USA, 2003
- Catholic Hymns Old and New, Kevin Mayhew Ltd, England, 2009
It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Vissing. This has a NN time signature. In the key of Y, the first few notes of the melody are B, D F E_ E_ with accompanying chords Bm / Em.

Lyrics
The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:Oh living water, refresh my soul,
Oh living water, refresh my soul,
Spirit of Joy, Lord of Creation.
Spirit of hope, Spirit of peace
1. Spirit of God, Spirit of God.
2. Oh set us free, Oh set us free.
3. Come pray in us, come pray in us.
