Ag Críost an Síol

This is an Irish (Gaelic) language hymn about Christ the seed or sourse.

The words are attributed to Irish-native Roman Catholic priest and language scholar Michael Sheehan / Micheál Ó Síocháin (1870–1945).

It is almost always set to  a tune which was composed by Irish Roman Catholic composer and arranger of Irish traditional music, Seán O Ríada (1931-1971): The hymn is included in the first O'Riada mass, Ceol an Aifrinn, written in 1968.

Lyrics

as Gaeilge

Ag Críost an síol,
Ag Críost an fómhar:
In iothlann Dé
Go dtugtar sinn.
Ag Críost an mhuir,
Ag Críost an t-iasc:
I líontaibh Dé
Go gcastar sinn.

Ó fhás go haois
Is ó aois go bás,
Do dhá lámh', a Chríost,
Anall tharainn.
O bhás go críoc nach
Críoc ac athfhás,
I bParthas na ngrás go rabhaimid.

English translation:

The seed is Christ's,
The harvest is Christ's:
Into God's barn
May we be gathered.
The sea is Christ's,
The fish is Christ's:
In God's nets
May we be caught.

From birth to adulthood
And from adulthood to death,
May your two hands, O Christ,
Be drawn over us.
From birth to the end
Not an end but rebirth.
In the paradise of grace
may we be.
