Eucharistic Congress Hymn Book (1932)

This book was issued officially by the Organising Committee of the 31st International Eucharistic Congress, Dublin, in 1932.

It had Nihil Obstat from Michael L Dempspey (Censor. Theol. Deput), and Imprimi Potest from + EDUARDUS, Archiep. Dulinen, Hiberniae Primas, dated 6 March 1931.

The Preface by says that the committee was
"... confronted by many difficulties. In the first place, a choice had to be made of the hymns to be sung: secondly a definite melody had to be selected for each hymn; thirdly a definite version had to be chosen for each melody, there being many variants in use. The Committee has chosen in each case the melody that seemed to be the most familiar and most commonly used."

The Committee members are not named.

Directions for Singers - at the 1932 Eucharistic Congress Children' Saturday mass, and the Congress Mass on Sunday
The book has 18 pieces in Latin - including one Mass-setting, the Missa de Angelis.

There are also 11 hymns in English - and for each of these an Irish-language setting (with matching numbers of verses) is provided.   In all but one case, the tune of the Irish-language version is exactly the same, so it is set on the same staff.

In all cases, a unison melody line is given for the tune.

Copyright acknowledgement is given for a few works in the preface, but apart from this no information is provided about the writer or composers of any of the hymns.

Printed by the Juverna Press Limited, Dublin.

It includes some limited directions about the relationships between the choir, children's choir and congregation as the official Masses.
