Magnify and Glorify

This is a joyous hymn, glorifying God.

It is the finale in a cantata, Belshazzar's Feast (The Fall of Babylon) composed by pluralistic-Christian, American musician, songwriter and music-director, George Frederick Root (1820–1895).

It has been used as a stand-alone piece by various choirs:
  • There is a reference to it being sung by a Scottish choir at the start of a televised Christmas service in 2012 here
  • This article says it was sung at a church-opening in 1969,
  • This 1882 newspaper article refers to an anthem using the first line.
More recently, YouTube shows it being sung by choirs in various parts of Africa and the Pacific.

Lyrics

Magnify, glorify, extol and exalt the Lord
Magnify, glorify, His holy name for evermore
Magnify, glorify, extol and exalt the Lord
Exalt and glorify, magnify His name for evermore

Our feet shall stand within thy gates O Jerusalem.
Rejoice in thy salvation,
Our feet shall stand ... within thy gates,
O Jerusalem! shall stand within thy gates.
O Jerusalem! Magnify, glorify, extol and exalt the Lord
Magnify, glorify, His holy name for evermore;

Magnify, glorify, extol and exalt the Lord
Exalt and glorify
Magnify His name for evermore.

Extol him that rideth upon the heav'ns.
By his Name, JAH!
Extol him that rideth upon the heav'ns.
By his Name, JAH!
And rejoice, and rejoice, and rejoice,
Before Him.

We will rejoice in your salvation,
And in your Name will lift up our banners
And come again into singing unto Zion.
And obtain gladness and joy,
We will rejoice in your salvation.

And in your Name will will set up our banners
And come again into singing unto Zion.
And obtain gladness and joy Hallelujah! Amen
Alleluia! Amen! Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen!
