The author and original source are unknown: the earliest reference located so far is a book called Youth Melodies and Action Songs which was published in 1952. Most people who use the song treat it as if it is now in the public domain.
If the third verse (which mentions Matthias and Paul) is included, then this song can be used alongside There were Twelve Disciples to teach the difference between disciples (ie followers) and apostles (ie followers who were sent out to spread the message).

Yes, Jesus called them,
Yes, Jesus called them,
He called them one by one.
James the one they called the less,

Twelfth apostle Judas made,
Jesus was by him betrayed.
Matthias then took Judas' place,
To preach to men of every race,

And went to Rome for Jesus' sake.
