My God said to me ‘Follow’

This hymn is about responding to the call to discipleship.

It was written by American Roman Catholic and member of the Christian Brothers order, Louis Welker, FSC (1943-2020).

It was published in More Songs of the Spirit, published by Kevin Mayew Ltd, England in 1981.   The original title was "Here I Am", but most recordings identify it according to the first line of the chorus.

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Welker. This has a 3/8 time signature. In the key of G, the first few notes of the melody are G_ G_ GAB B A with accompanying chords G / Em / Am / D7.

Chorus:
My God said to me ‘Follow!’
My God said to me ‘Come!’
My God called out my name.
‘Here I am’, ‘Here I am to do your will.’

1 To follow the Lord is to be set free
to follow the Lord is to know the way.

2 To live with the Lord is to live in love;
to live with the Lord is to live in peace.
