I Will Sing Unto the Lord (The horse and rider)

This is an energetic worship song.  It is based on Miriam's response after God saved the people by having Moses lead them through the Red Sea, as told in Exodus 15:1-18.   The bible passage is known as the “Song of the Sea”.   This hymn is also known as the The Song of Moses and Miriam.

The words are very closely based on (an un-named translation of) the scripture passage:  it is not known who versified and fitted them to the tune.   If you have any information about this, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

The earliest published versions found, so far, are:
  • Sing and Rejoice! New Hymns for Congregations, published for the Mennonite church by Herald Press in  Scottdale, Pennsylvania USA and Kitchener, Ontario, Canada in 1979.  In this book the words and tune are attributed as "traditional".
  • Scripture in Song - Songs of Praise, published in New Zealand in 1979, which provides no attribution for the song.

It was included in a 1978 album titled Follow the Leader - Kids of the Kingdom with  Annie Herring (ref) - attributed "unknown".

With irregular meter, the song is set to a tune called TZENA. This melody was written in 1941 for an un-related secular folk-song written in Hebrew by Israeli Jehiel Hagges.   The composer was Polish-born, Israeli and later American immigrant, Issachar Miron-Michrovsky, a.k.a. Stefan Michrovsky, (1920–2015 source).

Lyrics

1 I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and rider thrown into the sea.
I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and rider thrown into the sea.
The Lord my God, my strength my song,
has now become my victory;
The Lord my God, my strength my song,
has now become my victory.

Chorus:
The Lord is God and
I will praise him, my father is God and I will exalt him;
The Lord is God and
I will praise him, my father is God and I will exalt him.

2 I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
The chariots and host thrown into the sea.
I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
The chariots and host thrown into the sea.
The Lord my God; oh man of war,
has now become my victory;
The Lord my God; oh man of war,
has now become my victory.

3 I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
They went down like a stone into the deep.
I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
They went down like a stone into the deep.
The Lord my God, his glory and power, has now become my victory;
Oh Lord my God, thy right hand’s power, has now shattered the enemy;
The Lord my God, his glory and power, has now become my victory;
Oh Lord my God, thy right hand’s power, has now shattered the enemy;

4 I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
He plants them on his mountain that is green.
I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
He plants them on his mountain that is green.
Oh Lord my God, the place the spot,
which thou made for thy sanctuary;
Oh Lord my God, the place the spot,
which thou made for thy sanctuary.

Final chorus:
The Lord will reign and
I will praise him, my father will reign and I will exalt him.
The Lord will reign and
I will praise him, my father will reign and I will exalt him.

Optional verse for use at Easter:
I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously:
the grave is empty. Won't you come and see?
I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously:
the grave is empty. Won't you come and see?
The Lord, my God, my
trength and song, has now become my victory.
The Lord, my God, my
strength and song, has now become my victory.
