This is a hymn of petition for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
It was written by Canadian born, Russian Mennonite pastor's daughter, musician and teacher, pastor's wife, and later Mennonite pastor, Anne Neufeld Rupp (1932-2020). It was written in 1970 at her husband's request, to accompany a Pentecost sermon which he was preaching (1).
- BEACH SPRING - published in the 1844 Sacred Harp book, and is sometimes attributed to its editor, B. F. White - the most-commonly used tune for this hymn
- HYFRYDOL by Welch textile worker and composer, Rowland H. Prichard (1811-1887)
- RUSTINGTON by English composer C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918)
