Fish With Me

This is an upbeat rock-style song about discipleship. The verses are based on the miracle of the great catch of fish, the story of the rich young man and the invitation to take up your cross and follow Jesus (Matthew 4:18-22, 16:24-26 and 21:25-26).

It was written by  American-Filipino Roman Catholic composer and liturgist Ken Canedo, during the 1990s when he was working as a youth-minister.  It aims to be a simple, accessible rock style song that invites young people to follow Jesus.  Later, it was the title of "Fish With Me: More Songs For Every Generation" an album recorded by Canedo and Jesse Manibusan under the Spirit and Song label in 2016.

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Canedo.  This has a 2/2 time signature. In the key of E, the first few notes of the melody are G G G G GF F GF E E C B,B  with accompanying chords E / D / A / E.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
1. Jesus saw them fishing by the shore or Galilee,
casting out their nets into the sea.
Simon Peter, Andrew, and the sons of Zebedee,
Waiting in their boats so patiently.

Chorus:
Oh, Come and follow me.
Oh, leave behind your nets I call you,
Oh, come and fish with me,
and your life will never be the same again.

2. A rich young person came to Jesus looking for advice,
“How can I obtain eternal life?”
Jesus told him, “Honor the commandments of the Lord.
Then sell off all your riches for the poor”.

3. If you want to follow me, deny your very self.
Take up your cross and walk the walk with me.
This might seem a hardship, and impossibility,
but nothing is impossible with God.
