God Loves You and I Love You | God Loves Me And I Love You

This is a song about God's love for each person, experienced in community.

It has two distinctly different forms, which have the same chorus - although some recordings change the wording slightly from "God loves You" to "God loved Me).

One is a catchy children's song, with three simple verses that extend on the ideas in the chorus.  It appears to be widely known and regarded as "traditional" in Australia and parts of Asia.    The other is a song written by American evangelical pastor, recording artist, song writer and record producer, Stephen W. (Steve) Boalt, recorded on his 1975 LP "Jesus Is My Sunshine" (source).  This was later arranged by American church choral director, organist pianist, and music publisher, (Richard?) Dick Bolks and recorded by The Dick Bolks singers (unfortunately accompanied by Rolf Harris).

It has not been possible to work out which of these versions came first, ie did Boalt take an existing children's chorus and extend it to a succinct telling on Jesus life, or did (possibly vacation-bible-school) teachers take the chorus of Boalt's work and create a fun action song.

The unnamed tune has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes of the melody are F_ FE D  G_ GF  E  F_ FE D  E   with accompanying chords D / G / D / A7.

Chorus:
God loves you, and I love you,
and that's the way it should be.
God loves you, and I love you,
and that's the way it should be.

1.  You can be happy, and I can be happy,
and that's the way it should be.
You can be happy, and I can be happy,
and that's the way it should be.

2.  You can be very sad, I can be very sad,
and that's the way it can be.
You can be very sad, I can be very sad,
and that's the way it can be.

3.  We can love others like sisters and brothers;
and that's the way it should be.
We can love others like sisters and brothers;
and that's the way it should be.

1. My Jesus came as a little baby, born in a cattle stall.
The shepherds came to the Virgin-born baby and worshiped at the angel's call.

Chorus:
God loves you, and I love you, and that's the way it will be.
God loves you, and I love you, and that's the way it will be.

2. Messiah grew, and then he knew he was the son of God,
He healed the sick and the blind and lame as through the land he trod.

3. He bled and died, was crucified, his life was given for you
Then he rose from the grave, new life to give, and you can have it too.
Why don't you trust him now, before him bow... your life will overflow
And spread the word, they've never heard, that Jesus loves us all.
