The 'American' Eucharist / 8-fold Mass setting

This is a folk-style Mass setting, first published in 1971 by Mayhew-McCrimmon in England.

The words are freely adapted from the ICEL-73 English translation of the Catholic mass.  This setting was assembled shortly after Vatican II allowed Catholic services to use local languages.  As was common at the time, only a few parts of the Mass were set to music and the link between the official words and this version is loose, so that the text fits the tune.  The words of the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei are attributed as adapted from the Liturgy by Sandra Joan Billington (b 1946), while the gospel and Memorial acclamations were adapted by Robert B Kelly (b. 1948).  If you have any more information about Billington or Robert B Kelly, please leave a message in the Comment box near the bottom of the page.

Each piece in it is set to a very simple tune, described by some sources as a "traditional American melody" and  regarded as being in the public domain.  Despite this, American singer-songwriter and member of the "Jesus People" movement Jerry Sinclair (1943-1993 - source) registered copyright for a an arrangement of it, set with just the word "alleluia", in 1972 - after the first English publication.

The setting is probably not widely used any more.  Some people say that it has been retired and should be forgotten.   Nevertheless, it was widely used, is still used occasionally, and is still sought by people looking for what they remember, or for actual information about early post-Vatican II music.   And this page was inspired by a request from a website visitor who is serving a particular elder community.

Lyrics

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy,
On your people(*), Lord, have mercy.
God Almighty, just and faithful,
Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.

Christ, have mercy, Christ, have mercy,
Gift from heaven, Christ, have mercy.
Light of truth, and light of justice,
Christ have mercy, Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy,
on your servants(*), Lord, have mercy.
God Almighty, just and faithful,
Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.

(*)  Some versions have "on your servants"

Gospel Acclamation

(Not in the original published version but this has been one of the more-common uses of the tune)
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus.

OR the Robert B Kelly version
Alleluia, alleluia,
Let us praise Christ, our Lord Jesus.
Alleluia, let us praise him,
Now among us in his Gospel

Holy Holy

Holy, holy, holy, holy,
Lord of hosts, you fill with glory,
All the earth and all the heavens,
sing hosanna, sing hosanna.

Blest and holy, blest and holy
he who comes now in the Lord’s name.
In the highest, sing hosanna.
In the highest, sing hosanna.

Mystery of Faith

When we eat this bread you give us,
And we drink this cup you left us;
We proclaim your death Lord Jesus
'Til you come again in glory.

Agnus Dei / Lamb of God

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy,
bearer of our sins, have mercy.
Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy,
bearer of our sins, have mercy.

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy,
bearer of our sins, have mercy.
Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy,
bearer of our sins, have mercy.

Saviour of the world, Lord Jesus,
may your peace be with us always.
Saviour of the world, Lord Jesus,
may your peace be with us always.
