What a Blessed Hope is Mine

This is a hymn about hope, based in faith in Jesus.

The words are attributed to Robert Bruce, which is believed to be one of the pseudonyms used by American Baptist mission worker, poet, lyricist, and Gospel hymn-writer Fanny Crosby (1820-1915). It was originally published in 1896 by The Biglow and Main Company of New York, USA, and has since been included in some collections from Africa.

It is set to a tune by American gospel singer and composer Ira D Sankey (1840-1908).

Lyrics

What a blessed hope is mine,
Through the love of Jesus!
I’m an heir of life divine,
Through the love of Jesus!

Chorus:
He will my soul defend;
He, my unchanging Friend;
He will keep me to the end:
All glory be to Jesus!

I can sing without fear,
Praise the name of Jesus!
He, my present help, is near,
Praise the name of Jesus!

Pressing on my pilgrim way,
Trusting only Jesus!
Oh, ‘tis joy from day to day,
Trusting only Jesus!

Thus my journey I’ll pursue,
Looking unto Jesus!
Till the land of rest I view,
There to dwell with Jesus!

Alternate verse:
For the blessed hope of Christ
I lay strife of this world.
For our salvation dear Christ
Did come down to us from the Lord.
