People's Mass Book - Edition for Ireland (Chapman, 1966)

This book was published by Geoffrey Chapman Ltd of London and Dublin, and approved for use in Ireland by the Liturgical Commission of the Hierarchy for Ireland.

It was edited by Rev Michael Harty of St Patrick's College, Maynooth.

The first printing was in 1966, and there were eight re-prints through to 1968 (from which the listing below is taken).

It is Concordat cum originali from Eugene O'Doherty, Ep. Dromoren, 23 July 1966, and Imprimatur from Ioannes Carolus, Arch Dublinen, Hiberniae Primas, 15 August 1966.   There is a foreward by William Cardinal Conway, Archbishop of Armagh, Primate of all Ireland dated 3 August 1966.

It was printed in Ireland by Carhill and Co Ltd, and is set in 9pt and 11pt Univers typeface.   There are 127 pages, and the page size is slightly smaller than A6.

The book is divined into four sections:
  • Some thoughts before Mass - two pages of reflections
  • The text of the Ordinary of the Mass
  • Texts for "the four chants, the Introit, Gradual-Alleluia, Offertory and Commuion" for the major seasonal Masses through the year, as well as nuptial and requiem Mass.
  • Words of 16 hymns and Psalms for use at Mass - all in the English language.
